Chief Executive Joanne Cicero
Chief Executive Statement: I am a homicide survivor. My 17 year old son was murdered in 1995. Three years later I had the opportunity to start a victims' advocacy program at a non-profit organizaztion and served as program director for seven years until establishing a new program and becoming executive director.
My life experience give me a unique perspective on the challenges crime victims face and I can honestly say to some of my clients that I truly understand what you are going through as I have been there in my own life. I also faciliate a monthly Homicide Support Group for families who have lost a family member to homicide.
From my own experience as a homicide survivor I knew I was never going to be my old self again. But what I realized was that I could contribute to the recovery process for other victims of crime and help them face the future more confidently.
Many times, victims are not aware of their rights and don't know what to do or where to turn. Our program provides the emotional and financial support they need to help them get through a difficult time.
Program funded by NYS Crime Victims BoardRights of Crime VictimsRights of Crime Victims New York State has an entire article of law dedicated to serving the interests of crime victims. The Fair Treatment Standards for Crime Victims is contained within Article 23 of the Executive Law. The purpose of that act is to ensure that the State’s criminal justice system has appropriate standards for the treatment of innocent victims of crime. Much of the information contained in Article 23 is explained in The Crime Victims Board Rights of Crime Victims New York State pamphlet which is designed to be an important resource for those who are facing the challenges associated with being a crime victim; it is an excellent source of information on victims’ rights relating to judicial proceedings, victim impact statements, restitution and much more.
